SUMATI SURYA
Sylvie Paycha and Sumati Surya
I feel very happy with the broader choices I have made. These choices
arose from an inner desire to engage with and learn more about physics
and mathematics. The desire and hunger to know is something which is
built into my personality. It is deeply satisfying to learn and do research,
and it is a joy for me to be able to be quiet and alone, reading and
working. When I don’t get time for this, I tend to get agitated!
While some areas of theoretical physics are growing at a ridiculously
fast pace, others like QG develop at a slower speed. We live in a time
of ›quick results‹, which are not always meaningful. There tends to be
an over-emphasis on ›success‹ and ›achievement‹, leading to some
very misleading statements. Unpacking what is a real result from
the ›hype‹ is becoming harder and harder because strong claims are
made, which however are less and less precisely stated!
