Feast of Mathematics: two days with and for Ingrid Daubechies
The May12 initiative, now in its 5th year, is a joyous occasion for the international mathematical community to celebrate women in mathematics.
The date of 12 May was chosen on 31 July 2018, on the occasion of the World Meeting for Women in Mathematics, because it is the birthday of Maryam Mirzakhani, the first woman to be awarded the Fields Medal, a precious prize that is awarded every four years to the world's best mathematicians who have not yet turned 40.
Every year, local or virtual events are organised all over the world between 1 May and 15 June, with the aim of encouraging diversity and overcoming gender prejudices, extolling the achievements of female researchers in mathematics, and also to guide and stimulate young women who want to study this discipline.
For the May12 2023 edition, the Guido Castelnuovo Department of Mathematics and the Italian Mathematical Union have set up a local and national initiative, focusing on an exceptional mathematician: Ingrid Daubechies, among others, winner of the prestigious Wolf Prize in Mathematics 2023. The celebration spans the two days of 11 and 12 May, culminating in Ingrid Daubechies being awarded an Honorary Doctorate in Mathematics.
